The Space You Create Shapes How You Feel

Using simple Feng Shui and intention to support your nervous system

Recently I had the opportunity to move into a new location, which meant setting up my room from the beginning.

There’s something about a fresh space that invites you to pause before just placing everything where it used to go. Instead of rushing to get settled, I found myself asking a different question:

What do I want this space to feel like?

Because the truth is, the space we live in becomes the space our body experiences every day. And whether we realize it or not, our nervous system is constantly responding to it.

Over the past few months, I’ve become more aware of how much our surroundings influence how we feel. The spaces we spend time in can either support a sense of calm and clarity… or quietly add to feelings of stress and overwhelm. With that in mind, I decided to approach this move a little differently.

Looking at My Space with Fresh Eyes

Instead of thinking only about function or where things would fit, I started paying attention to how the room actually felt. Where did things feel open?Where did they feel heavy? Was there space to breathe, or did certain areas feel crowded? That curiosity led me back to something many of us have heard of but don’t always explore deeply—Feng Shui.

Not in a complicated or rigid way, but as a simple way to think about how energy moves through a space and how that, in turn, affects us.

Using Feng Shui as a Gentle Guide

As I began setting up my room, I chose to follow a simple approach called Black Hat Feng Shui, which uses a tool called the Bagua map.

Rather than aligning with compass directions, the map is placed based on the doorway of the room. When I laid it over my space, I realized that my room falls into the back right corner of the Bagua, which represents the relationship and partnership area.

In Feng Shui, this isn’t only about romantic relationships. It also reflects the energy of connection, harmony, and the supportive relationships we hold in our lives. That awareness didn’t make the process complicated—it simply gave me a little more intention behind the choices I was making.

Small Changes That Create a Different Feeling

I didn’t do anything dramatic. In fact, most of the changes have been simple. I placed a pair of small nightstands on each side of the bed. There’s something about that symmetry that immediately makes the room feel more balanced and grounded.

I’ve kept the space mostly neutral and calm, which naturally helps the nervous system settle. Soft tones feel less demanding on the eyes and create a quieter environment overall.

When choosing artwork, I’ve been mindful not to bring in too many new elements. Instead, I’m selecting pieces that reflect colors already present in the room, so everything feels connected rather than busy. Individually, these are small decisions. But together, they’ve started to shift the feeling of the room in a noticeable way.

Creating a Sacred Space Within the Room

As I continued setting up the room, I realized something important—it wasn’t just about creating a small sacred corner.

The intention became to allow the entire room to feel like a sacred space.

Because I offer virtual Reiki and somatic sessions, it felt meaningful to create an environment where I can fully arrive, ground, and hold space—not just in one area, but throughout the room itself. Even though my clients join me online, the energy of the space I’m sitting in still matters.

With the room sitting in the relationship area of the Bagua, I’ve been intentional about reflecting that energy through the space as a whole.

I’ve incorporated soft rose tones, neutrals, and light gray, creating a palette that feels calm, supportive, and gently heart-centered. Throughout the room, I’ve added objects that subtly reflect partnership, connection, and the work I do through Reiki and Somatic coaching

Nothing feels forced or overly designed. Instead, the room is coming together in a way that feels balanced, intentional, and aligned with the energy I want to hold—both for myself and for the people I work with. There’s something powerful about stepping into a space where everything around you quietly supports the same intention. It becomes easier to settle. Easier to breathe. Easier to be present.

A Small Reset You Can Try

You don’t have to move into a new home to create a shift like this. Sometimes it starts with one small space. A nightstand. A corner of a room. A single surface that feels a little too full. Clear it. Adjust it. Simplify it. Then pause for a moment and notice how it feels. Often, even the smallest change can create a sense of openness that your body immediately responds to.

A Gentle Reminder

Spring naturally brings an invitation to begin again. Not in a way that requires doing more, but in a way that allows us to become a little more intentional with what we already have.

Our homes don’t need to be perfect. But when we create spaces that feel calm, balanced, and supportive, they begin to quietly support us in return.

The space you create around you becomes the space your nervous system lives within—so creating calm outside may be one of the simplest ways to create calm within. And sometimes, even with supportive spaces, our bodies still need a little extra help finding that sense of balance again. This is the work I’m honored to hold space for through my virtual Reiki and somatic sessions—supporting the nervous system in gently returning to a place of calm, connection, and ease. If you’re feeling called to create more calm and balance within your body…
